Course Overview: Mathematics

Mathematics is taught for four hours per week at Key Stage 4. Students are grouped according to ability. All students sit the Edexcel Mathematics GCSE (1MA1) at the end of year 11.

The qualification consists of three equally-weighted written examination papers at either Foundation tier or Higher tier. Paper 1 is a non-calculator assessment and a calculator is allowed for Paper 2 and Paper 3. Each paper is 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Each paper has 80 marks. The content outlined for each tier will be assessed across all three papers.

The qualification will be graded and certificated on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1 using the total mark across all three papers where 9 is the highest grade. Grades 1 to 5 are available at foundation tier. Grades 3 to 9 are available at higher tier.

Foundation tier topic weightings: Number 25%; Algebra 20%; Ratio, Proportion and Rates of change 25%; Geometry and Measures 15%; Statistics & Probability 15%.

Higher tier topic weightings: Number 15%; Algebra 30%; Ratio, Proportion and Rates of change 20%; Geometry and Measures 20%; Statistics & Probability 15%.
